San Fernando Pastoral Regional Council Meeting Minutes
June 21, 2008
Present: Bishop Gerald E. Wilkerson,Jean Brown, Karen Brown, Ben Decenario, Annabelle Farmer, Fr. Raymond Finerty, OP, Rosy Hungerford,
Frank Luciano, Dn. Richard Medina, Regi Meehan, Msgr. Peter Moran, Lito Reyes, Monica Ryoo, Kathleen Schwartz, Cambria Smith, Willis Veluz-Abraham, Dennis Young, Rev. Richard Zanotti, CS
Absent: Fernando Baeza, Willy Castro, Tim Donahoe, Jack Dunn, Dn. Ken Elsey, Mike Gonzales, Sr. Rochelle Mitchell, SSS, Msgr. Ed Renehan, Exiquio Ruiz, Dn. Bob Seidler
1. A Scripture reading, from Sunday’s Gospel was read by Dennis Young, followed by a quiet reflection to share with your neighbor.
2. Synod 1 Report on Evangelization from Frank Luciano (Note: Frank had to leave early so he gave report before the Bishop’s report).
o Combined Cardinal Mahoney’s letter on Evangelization with his collaborative work to summarize ideas on how parishes by taking small steps to get behind this
o Many great websites to develop and promote Evangelization
o Important that we are not promoting another program, just new ways to help energize our communities to help reach out to those who are see king answers
o 23% of Catholics attend Sunday Mass and 40% attend occasionally; 10% of cradle Catholics, have fallen away
o We need to reach those in the pews, may be during Mass, to include reflective questions, to make us think more about our Faith
o Let parishioners know there are others ways to pray along with traditional prayer and that it is okay to have a conservation with God
o We are the liaison between the parishes and to pass this information that might be beneficial to their congregation
o There are many Catholics hurting from divorce, waiting for annulments, not being able to receive the Eucharist can be reached through even a small step in the Evangelization process
o Note: Regi Meehan will join Synod 1
3. Moderator’s Report:
o Please pray for Jack Dunn’s family. His son is facing a kidney transplant and his daughter is donating her kidney. He was excused from the meaning.
o NOTE: Willy Castro was to be introduced as a new member from Deanery 6, but did not attend this meeting.
o Msgr. Ed Renehan is retiring. A replacement will be appointed by the Bishop.
o Deanery 6 is short a representative.
o Cambria Smith will be leaving the SFPRC, due to a newly appointed position as a Pastoral Associate for Holy Family Parish in Pasadena. (A short thank you and words of appreciation was said by our moderator Jean Brown)
o Our Council is becoming more balanced with members
o The Tidings is still looking for a volunteer reporter from our region. Please contact Deacon Richard, who is spearheading this project
4. Bishop’s Report:
o Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship Workshop Wed., July 2nd. Explains and give insight as to how we should vote this November.
o Catholic Legislative Network- we need to encourage people to sign up and be promoted through the parishes. This is a easy way to voice our opinion to Sacramento. leginfo@catholic.org
o Fingerprinting Guidelines and Policies- important to keep a safe environment for our children
o Best practices for Parish Elementary Schools –LMU published a survey on 8th grade scholarship recipients from Catholic Education Foundation and their high school . Our record for students graduating from high school have a low drop-out rate. How do we keep our schools strongs by keeping an affordable tuition
o Information on how our region is growing and housing practices (handouts with more details and percentages)
o Website to be used concerning marriages needs to get out to the parishes www.foryourmarriage.com. Dennis made a suggestion about putting commercials on websites.
o Theology on Tap information needs to be put in parish bulletins.
5. Synod Committee Reports:
o APC Report from Kathy Schwartz “How successful we have been”
o They are asking each Synod committee to come up with a report explaining what you have done and how you did it, how did you collect your data,etc.
o Our region has done a lot of this already due to the surveys and workshops we have sponsored
o The Cardinal has asked also so they can determine what has worked, etc.
o This will go on over the course of the next two years
o It is not an evaluation
o It is a way to show how we are focusing and collaborating together
o APC will have a committee to assemble all this information to share with other councils
o All information will be reviewed by the Bishop, the Executive Committee, and our council. They will be turned in by October, 2008.
o APC will meet with all regions in January 10th, 2009.
o Synod 3 – Post Baptismal Program – Some parishes have other ideas and some have chosen the different programs. Most important is to be a liasion. Cost is an issue with some parishes. Bishop feels at least it is a way to create ideas and to keep connected. It is a program that needs money and people power. Keep in touch!
o Synod 4 Reviewing research about tenure
o Synod 5 needs a chair for Sacramental Living (Exiquio Ruiz). Deacon Bob will do Vocations.
o Synod 6 needs a chair. Kathleen Brown has been asked to be chairperson. Social Justice is working on Citizenship.(Note: you can have a leader who is not on the SFPRC). Sr. Claudia role on commission.Esquio Ruiz will be asked to be on Commission for APR on Social Justice.
6. Elections for SFPRC – we need to vote on the Executive Committee. The results are as follows: Moderator – Jean Brown, Vice Moderator – Lito Reyes, Secretary –Rosy Hungerford, Delegates at large –Regi Meehan and Karen Brown
Future Meetings: Saturday, October 4, 2008 8:30 – 11:00 a.m.; Saturday, November 15, 2008 8:30 – 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 7, 2009 8:30 – 11:00 a.m.; Saturday, June 27, 2009 8:30 - 11:00 a.m.
Meeting adjourned at 11:15 am with a closing prayer.
Bishop Wilkerson hosted a lunch for al the members of the Regional Pastoral Council.
