March 24, 2009
I. Gathering and fellowship: The meeting was called to order by Moderator, David Kennedy.
Present: Bishop Alexander Salazar, Rev. Antonio Garnica, MSC, Rev. Michael Gleeson, Rev. James Kavanagh, Deacon Bob Miller, David Kennedy, Hank Cierpich, Earl Lovett, Marisol Meza, Charles Salfity, Martin Clement, Dennis Branconier, Lou Cassani, Sister. Kathleen Burns S.N.D., Jim Dela Torre, Rosalie Marquez, Sister Karen Wilhelmy, CSJ, Kathy Hamrock, Frances Jonte, Roger Enriquez, and Ana Rosal.
Excused: Tom Connolly, Nora Rodriquez, Deacon Carl Gibboney, and Alfonso Perez
Absent: Rev. Michael Sears and Deacon Frank Dieter
Guests: Deacon David Estrada, Doris Benavides, Paulette Smith, and Karina Plascencia
II. Opening Prayer / Installation of new members
Bishop Alexander Salazar called the following new council members forward: Roger Enriquez, Dennis Branconier, and Reverend James Kavanagh. He then led the Council in the Opening Prayer. Following the opening prayer, Bishop Salazar personally welcomed the new members and presented each with a copy of the Synod Documents and an SPRPC lapel pin.
III. Agenda Confirmation
David Kennedy announced that the agenda has been modified to accommodate those subjects requiring more time.

V. Moderators’ Comments
David Kennedy introduced Paulette Smith, Religious Education Congress Event Coordinator, and Karina Plascencia, San Pedro Regional Coordinator for Religious Education.
VI. Presentation by the Archdiocesan Office of Religious Education (Paulette Smith and Karina Plascencia)
Paulette Smith gave a detailed presentation on the Office of Religious Education. She stated that Sr. Edith Prendergast has been in charge for the past 22 years and explained her scope of responsibilities. She also shared the scope of the ministries within the Office of Religious Education.
Karina Plascencia talked about her role as the San Pedro Regional Coordinator for Religious Education. She stated that her goal is to empower and train and oversee. She also stated that all five Regions have a Religious Education Coordinator. Karina also announced that the San Pedro Regional Educational Conference will be held on October 9, 2009.
Paulette Smith added that the other four Regions would also be having similar conferences in the fall as well.
Paulette then discussed other ministries within her office including Catechist formation and the master catechist program, elementary catechist certification programs, early childhood programs, youth ministry and the leadership institute, congress and youth day, and the national certification program for youth.
Paulette also mentioned “Theology on Tap”, adult faith formation and the training taking place throughout the Regions, and closed with the mentioning of the link to the web site for upcoming events.
There were many questions and comments that followed their presentation.
VII. Bishop’s Comments
Bishop Alexander Salazar announced that Fr. Ed Benioff from Holy Trinity Parish in San Pedro is the new vocation director for the Region. Bishop Alexander Salazar stated that he would like to invite Fr. Ed Benioff to a Regional meeting in the future
VIII. Business
• Nominations for Executive Committee
Hank Cierpich shared the process for which everyone is to follow regarding the nominations. He asked that if nominated for a position on the Executive Committee, not to react, but to pray, discern, and then let Deacon Bob know by e-mail your decision to either accept or decline the nomination. Questions as to the process followed.
It was agreed upon that a list of those eligible to be Moderator be prepared and then send to everyone. Those nominated for the following positions are:
Vice Moderator: Hank Cierpich, Charles Salfity, Dennis Branconier, and Nora Rodriquez.
Secretary: Nora Rodriquez, Marisol Meza, Ana Rosal, Deacon Carl Gibboney, Rosalie Marquez, and Hank Cierpich.
At-Large: Dennis Branconier, Lou Cassani, Jim Dela Torre, Martin Clement, Alfonso Perez, Charles Salfity, Sister Karen Wilhelmy, CSJ, Sister Kathleen Burns, S.N.D., and Deacon Carl Gibboney.
Bishop recommended an ad-hoc committee be formed to deal with this process in the future.
•Discernment Days (ad hoc committee)
David Kennedy announced that there will be a single discernment day on Saturday, June 20, 2009.

• Reports on our Presentations at the Deaneries
The San Pedro Regional Council presentation at the deanery meetings was considered a big success by all concerned. David Kennedy announced that the Cardinal stated that he plans to invite all the regional councils to do it again next year.
IX. Synod Office Report
Deacon Dave Estrada said that they are working on a stewardship web site. He also said that the Parish Finance Council workshop in Our Lady of Angels Region on March 14th was well received.
