May 26, 2009
I. Gathering and fellowship: The meeting was called to order by the Moderator, David Kennedy. Present were Bishop Alexander Salazar, Deacon. Bob Miller, Deacon Frank Dieter, Deacon Carl Gibboney, Sister Karen Wilhelmy, Jim Dela Torre, Ana Rosal, Roger Enriquez, Marisol Meza, Rev. Michael Sears, Kathy Hamrock, Tom Connolly, Rosalie Marquez, Rev James Kavanagh, Frances Jonte, Charles Salfity, Martin Clement, David Kennedy, Earl Lovett, Nora Rodriguez, Lou Cassani, and Hank Cierpich.
Guest included Deacon David Estrada from the Synod Office
Excused were Rev. Antonio Garnica, MSC, and Alfonso Perez.
Absent were: Sr. Kathleen Burns, SND, and Dennis Branconier
II. Opening Prayer: John 20: 19-23 Proclaimed by Ana Rosal and Earl Lovett. Sharing followed on the concepts of “fear”, the meaning of “peace be with you”, forgiveness of sins, and the significance of the phase “breathed on them”.
III. Agenda Confirmation: David Kennedy announced that item #VI on the agenda has been removed until the next meeting. He also announced that there will be open nominations for the Executive Committee because of vacancies.
IV. Approval of Minutes: The minutes of the last meeting were reviewed and approved.
V. Moderators’ Comments: David Kennedy had no comments.
VII. Bishop’s Comments: Bishop Alexander Salazar announced that he has had two meetings with the priest of the region. One was at American Martyrs in Redondo Beach, and the other was at St. Bernard in Bellflower. They were both well attended.
In conjunction with Fr. Ed Benioff as the Regional Vocation Director, each Deanery will also have a Vocational Director. Rev. Sam Ward will represent Deanery 17, Rev. John Paul Gonzales will represent Deanery 18, Rev. Brian Nunez will represent Deanery 19, and Rev. Jose Magana will represent Deanery 20.
Our next goal is to try and find Vocational Directors for every parish. Bishop Alexander Salazar went on to state that we are confirming approximately 7000 young men and women in our region this year.
Everyone was encouraged to spread the word and attend a meeting on June 6th on air quality and energy conversation issues to be held at St. John Baptist De La Salle Parish, 10738 Hayvenhurst Ave., Granada Hills.
VIII. ELECTION OF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
Kathy Hamrock passed out ballots and the voting for the Executive Committee of the San Pedro Regional Pastoral Council for 2009/2010 took place.
The results of the election are:

IX. REPORTS
• AD-HOC COMMITTEE REPORT: David Kennedy reported that this year the discernment day will be one day and will beheld on June 20th, from 8 – 2 p.m. at St. Cyprian, 4714 Clark Ave., Long Beach. Hank Cierpich then named all those whose terms are expired in 2009. Discussion followed as to those eligible to be on the Regional Pastoral Council and to logistics of the discernment day. Bishop Alexander Salazar encouraged everyone to call their parishes and mentioned priest by name.
• INITIATIVE COMMITTEE REPORTS:
There were no reports submitted for this meeting.
• ARCHDIOCESE PASTORAL COUNCIL REPORT (APC): Discussion ensued as to those who presently serve on the APC and their term of office. Bishop Alexander Salazar recommended that the new moderator meet with the three current representatives on the APC and come up with a plan to be presented at our next meeting addressing the issue of expired terms on the RPC vs. the terms on the APC.
IX. Synod Office Report: Deacon David Estrada reported that his office is promoting the “green on green” environmental philosophy and hopes to encourage it at the regional level that it will be adopted by all parishes. He also announced that the Regional Councils will be making presentations again next year at the deanery level. He said that his office would like to establish a common theme within the regions on an annual basis and we’ll all work together to accomplish it.
Deacon David Estrada closed by announcing that a Parish Life Director (PLD) has been appointed within the San Pedro Region. Margarita Flores has been appointed for a two year term to begin on July 1st at Sagrado Corazon Catholic Church in Compton.
XI. Announcements:
The council presented Bishop Alexander Salazar with a cake congratulating him on his silver anniversary as a priest.
XII. Closing / Night Prayer / Fellowship: Charles Salfity led the closing night prayer.
Our next meeting will be on July 28, 2008 at 7:00 p.m., in the St. Pancratius conference room.
